INCLUSION 2.0

Policies, practices, and cultures of schools for everyone

Index in tour

Index in tour is an initiative organized by WeWorld, an ONG engaged in different contexts around the world to promote the right to quality education for all. Hitherto, the Tour stopped at Naples, Palermo, Polignano (BA), Turin, Milan, Trapani, Cagliari, Rome, and Genua.

Why the Index?

The Index for Inclusion, in particular the new version (CSIE, 2011; Ital. ed. Carocci, 2014) has been successfully used by dozens of schools in different parts of the world. It has proved a very effective tool to tackle the phenomenon of early school leaving. Perhaps the most evident peculiarity  of the approach developed by Booth and Ainscow, also with reference to the Italian context, is the ability to combine a deep knowledge of school organization with a community design in order to build alliances with all the stakeholders which may collaborate to innovation inside and outside the schools. Compared to other experiences of action research already conducted in our country, the Index offers three important elements.

On the one hand, there is a methodological structure both very reliable and flexible, enabling each school to gradually plan changes leaving wide autonomy in the planning and implementation of interventions. As the authors point out, in keeping with the tradition of Anglo-Saxon pragmatism, it is important to start, to undertake the way towards the implementation and dissemination of policies, practices and inclusive cultures that help to understand the meaning and the need of education.

On the other hand, there is a profound call to education as a crucial space of elaboration of community values understood not only as enunciations, but also as a compass for the development of practices. Such practices contribute to setting in motion visible changes for people who undergo marginal or negative school experiences, involving "difficult" families and students. Finally, the third element is the active support of diversity as a critical factor to increase the widespread resources for learning and participation that every school needs. As the authors remind us, "in each area there are always more resources to support learning and participation than are actually used." Therefore, the Index offers great opportunities for orientation and guidance, helping us to track and bring into play these resources. This way, schools can positively evolve from situations that at first sight seem especially complex or problematic.
